I have been taking 5 a day for the past 5 years. It never stopped my tremor, but I certainly suffered with side effects. I am going to quit.
Some studies show that Sinemet may be addictive, but in many of those cases it was because an individual was thought to have PD, prescribed Sinemet, and took it when they didn't need it in the first place. Their brains become dependent on the "dopamine high". That doesn't happen with a PD patient as the Sinemet changes to dopamine in the brain, something that we all don't have enough of and really need. It may also be your brain anticipating the next dose of Sinemet that may resemble addiction, but instead is just the urge to overcome incapacitating motor symptoms. That being said, do not quit cold turkey. Doing so can cause some wicked side effects. If you want to quit, you must wean yourself off the medication slowly and under your doctor's supervision. Even though it's hard to believe because it makes you feel lousy, your brain depends on that medication. I knew early on that I was taking too much Sinemet. As the days went by, I felt worse than the day before. I insisted that my neurologist reduce the dosage, which he reluctantly did. I had begun reducing the dosage when the dyskinesia started, prompting us to reduce the dosage even more. I now take one third of what I was taking, and it's really helped. Unfortunately, treating this disease is not a perfect science, but I do hope this information helps.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, Sinrmet is NOT a barbiturate. It is levadopa, or dopamine, something your brain needs, with carbadopa,, which helps get it more of it to the brain. You can't go off of it suddenly because your body depends on it. However, if Sinemet isn't doing a person any good there's no reason to use it.
It’s a barbiturates
Sinrmet is definitely not an additive medicine. However, it is not a medicine you should be stopping cold turkey because the side effects are very dangerous. It is a med from which you must be seemed under the care of a doctor so you don't end up much sicker for a different reason. I urge you to speak with your doctor before taking such action.
