We Are Taking A Family Trip In 2 Weeks On An Alaskan Cruise With My Parents. Any Recommendations For My Dad With Parkinson's?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My Dad will bring the walker (he calls it his four-wheeler!). I am thinking we need to reserve a wheelchair. Our rooms are near the elevator and are on the Lido deck (where all the action is). He shuffles his feet, get's fatigued easy and his judgement is not great (although he still drives). We are so excited about this trip and want to help him be successful. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I agree the meds can be the biggest problem but by no means unsolvable. Have everyone in the group set the alarms on their cellphones to his med schedule.or better. yet assign one person for each dose. They would remind me when the alarm went off but i would get so involvedin looking at the scenery that i would just forget to take them. You have to make sure the meds are taken.Admittingly, the trip can be tiring but it can be done and i wouldnt have missed it for the world.
Take Care , have a wonderful trip and make sure to let me know how everything went after making me do all thus typing. LOL One more thing make sure you take the excursuons that are considered MILD EXERSIZE.
I recomend:
Crab fest and plane ride with a busch pilot
Whale watching
Dont miss the White Pass AND Yukon Route train ride Its Amazing HAVE FUN

I would suggest talking with dr about dealing with meds & different time zones. A few years ago we went to Hawaii & I got very messed up on our way back home. Ended with medics at airport being called & what I considered a spectacle. I was mortified. Just a thought to consider! Hope all goes well & your trip is huge success!!!! Blessings!

It's probably better to have a wheelchair and not need it than to need one and not have it available. I'm sure it will help his energy level. Hope you all have a great vacation together!

Evaluate accessibility for disabled people .i f you go to tour or shopping ,check if is possible to use the scooter I recommend tours sponsored by cruise line because they.will wait for you in case of a delay incident with the tour. If you have walker take wth you because you can use at dinner time and leave the scooter at room .this way you can do a minimum exercise. All cruise have a gym maybe you may visit but please be very selective and preventive no physical lesión during the cruise.I hope you have a great cruise and the Best of Time 😎🤓
