Voice Amplifier
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi everyone,

My father’s voice is getting so bad it’s getting impossible to understand him. I’m looking at buying a voice amplifier and just wondering if anyone has had any experience of these and could recommend?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Issy

What is a speech amplifier? My husband has been trained by the Speech Therapist in the Silverman method. It has been highly successful! There are classes held in local hospitals. He practices his voice exercises with a caregiver 5 days a week. and I praise him for his loud voice when projecting. He used a sound level meter (Amazon) in the beginning days. I have hearing loss, so I am asking him to repeat at least half of many sentences and some times he just won't do it. He gets exasperated with me. Sadly, I miss too much of what he is trying to communicate.

My husband was given a speech amplifier but he found it very cumbersome and returned it (without consulting me!). I don't think he gave it a fair trial but because he knows what he is saying he assumes I do too - not always the case. He has also had speech therapy but is reluctant to do the exercises because he thinks he is shouting. I say I don't care if he shouts providing he can communicate! I would recommend speech therapy first.

Rocky used an amplifier without much luck mainly because as his speech got softer it got faster. He does the Loud speech therapy. He’s not good at doing his therapies on his off days, but our granddaughter have contests to see who can be the loudest and that seems to motivate him.
