My Brother feels that the pain in his buttock, hip and leg keeps him from being able to walk about with great balance problems and weakness where he tends to fall over. He believes it is sciatic but finds no relief. So is this sciatic a total different situation away from PD or is it combined?

My husband has had 2 back surgeries 35 years ago. Not related to PD then. He's 81 1/2 years old now and has had PD 8 years. It is
Very painful for him to walk anymore. He had an implant surgically implanted in his back for the pain and it's helping him a lot.

Gosh thanks so much. After I thought about it, I kind of figured it out but your definitions are great. Have an enjoyable day.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, carbo and Levo refer to the medicines that are generally considered the "gold standard" for treating PD. One stands for Levodopa, once called L-Dopa, and it is used to replace the dopamine in the brain which dies off causing Parkinson's Disease. Unfortunately, not enough of the levodopa made it to the brain to do the job well enough so they came up with carbidopa to add to the L-dopa which helps the levodopa do it its job much better. Originally called Sinemet, it now comes in a generic form, levocarbidopa.

DBS stands for deep brain stimulation, a surgical procedure during which electrodes are placed in the brain in order to stimulate the remaining brain chemicals to do their job, and to help them do their job. It might be considered a pacemaker for the brain instead of the heart. I have heard from, and known people, for whom it has been extremely helpful, though there can never be guarantees. It is a lengthy process, but well worth it for a majority of people. It is something you would need to discuss with your doctor to see if you qualify to start the process. Since I do not qualify I can't speak to what all the process involves.

I hope that helps. And if you have other questions feel free to ask; a lot of info can be found on this site.
Hugs!
Teresa
