What do you want to know about sinemet? I've been taking it since I was diagnosed 4 years ago.
If the swallowing tests and therapy have indicated that 'thicken' in liquids and eating soft foods is working much better for you, stick with the plan!!! If your swallowing becomes more difficult, talk with your doctor. In my husband's experience, the swallowing problems have been attributed to the Parkinson's itself as our central nervous system and the muscles in our throat effect our swallowing. Extreme swallowing difficulties do tend to occur in the very end stages of Parkinson's...my husband is there. (My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's over 30 years ago.)
My husband has had swallowing problems for the past few years and is now on a mechanical diet (soft, ground food). The swallowing difficulties have worsened as he is in the late stages of Parkinson's.
I've had some choking incidents, but swallowing problems with Parkinson's itself are very common, and not attributable to the sinemet. I went for voice and swallow therapy for a few months and even used a thickener for liquids and it's much better. Could it be that? There is a test they do where they have you swallow barium while x-rayed to see if that's the problem.
Best of luck and good health in the new year!
@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member. I had to stop taking Sinemet because I was choking. And it wasn't doing any good anyway. It turns out that I have an atypical Parkinson's called M. S. A. Which is like Parkinson's on steroids.
