How Do I Know If I Have PD
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My dad has PD. I am 56 n for the past 5 years my hands shake but more recently my right hand shakes more and I have involuntary movements. Does this mean I have PD. I also have times where I can’t get the name out of my mouth

Look up the yoga hand position 'vayu mudra'. This was suggested to me by my yoga instructor and I find it can usually stop tremors! You need to hold the finger down pretty firmly with your thumb for a while and I often find it acts like a switch in turning the tremor off even when it is effecting my hands, chin and leg! 35 to 40 mins is suggested or 3 sessions of 10 to 15 mins per day. I only have to use one hand in the mudra and in bed can usually keep the position holding my thumb and finger against my arm! Worth trying.

Hi @A MyParkinsonsTeam Member,
There are differing camps among those researching PD as to whether it’s genetic or environment caused. Having had it in the family doesn’t count much yet. Your symptoms seem right on but could have numerous causes.
The only reliable answer would be from a neurologist with experience in PD and related ailments. I've found that a large portion of the healthcare community remains unexposed to PD intracasies so be demanding. Sometimes experienced movement disorder neurologists have trouble pinning down PD as it is not technically a diagnosis, but a determination based on observation, history and a series of tests.
You have my sincerest hopes that you not fall among our ranks, but if you do you couldn’t be with a better group for support and info. I’ll add you to my team so its easier to reach out should you need to.
Think of it as another of life’s little challenges.

My husband started with a tremor for 1.5 years. He was sent to a neuro disorder/movement specialist immediately who has been watching him. In December of 2018 he diagnosed him with PD. During that time, especailly looking back, he was doing things a little slower, but then more symptoms like not swinging his arms as much during walking, etc. Dr. said hes probably had PD for years.

I would get to the dr. right away to see a neuro who can keep an eye on you. Make sure neuro is movement disorder specialist. Dont let anyone say "you dont have pd". and you probalby dont, but you might later. I have heard of people getting diagnosed too late.
In the meantime, if you dont exercise much, start exericising! It will help you no matter what.

And you just dont know if it could be heridary or not.

Blessings to you!

And to pile on what wokker said, if your doc doesn't have any answers ask for a reference to the best neurologist in your area. All the best to you.

It does indeed seem a good time to talk to your doctor, RobbieLP. I've no idea if you have PD but a visit seems needed to answer questions you have. Best to you in this.
