A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

started L-dopa for 3 days.I am Type 1 Diabetic..My blood sugar went thru the ROOF
and insulin response was totally wacky.

Have quit the l-dopa and BS has normalized.
Any way to deal with this nasty side-effect of the med.?

I'm wondering how much L-dopa you started out with lowest dose I Imagine 12.5/50mg

Perhaps timing the drugs proximity to meals and your insulin times differently could be the answer.

Keeping insulin and L-dopa as far away from each other as timing of your insulin allows
I'm not diabetic but I know you cant mess with insulin.

Although L-dopa needs to be taken at regular intervals, you can adjust when you take it as long as you stick to those times.
Ldopa has maximum effect on empty stomach at about 20 minutes and on a full stomach it can take 40 minutes.
While you introduce Ldopa theres no harm in introducing it one tablet at a time see what happens keep a record.
Avoiding constipation is essential if your to control how efficient L-dopa can be.
Its a tough time you've two chronic health conditions to manage so take your time slowly slowly for a result, you can do it. x

WEll, we have almost free medical coverage here i pay around $1100/yr...hence my remark about free medical......but us old folks are jammin up the system and some waiting is required. If you have an emergent issue like i had cancer, (x3)they get you right in and get to work...:)

Good luck with the new "free" Doc. That is a lot like "free shipping". Ain't no such thing. Keep on keeping on.

HI K4SGA,
THANKS !! I've been there with Pred too...my first experience with out of control blood sugar.
I'll post results of my current activities ASAP, but right now i'm in the line up for a new doc (only trouble with our "free" medical are the occasional waits. Hope to have some news soon tho.
Be well :)
