Kind Of Embarrassing. Does Anyone Have Problems With Excessive Gas?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Started a few months ago. Bend over a little and well you can guess. Talk about excessive amounts. The excessive amounts, you could blow up a party balloon. The excessive gas is a warning sign of a need for an imminent bowel movement. The gas turns to cramps and you better take it seriously.

It's an embarrassment, is it PD?

My Sister has excessive gas a lot and is very embarrassed by it! I think it is just a natural part of PK! The Doctor told her this is normal!

I have a big problem with gas also. I think it is a combination of age, PD and meds.

You could try writing down what you eat and the time you ate it and also track the gas times for a couple of weeks to see if u see a pattern. And if you try going off gluten would be useful too. Bring this to the gastro doc. My family doctor knew nothing about gluten, same for my pd specialist. Everything that happens just falls into the 'It must be PD category', and sometimes it really isn't PD.

There is an article there “Could gut microbes be the key to overcoming muscle loss in older age?”
“These studies also suggest that gut microbes are
Involved in cancer and neurological conditions
that destroy brain tissue.”
They are looking at a way to alter gut microbes as a way to treat this.
Supposedly these are the earlier markers that suggest Parkinson’s as a non motor symptom.

There is a ton of research going on right now connecting PD and stomach problems, so it’s pretty much a decent bet that some, if not most people with PD do already, or unfortunately will one day, have problems such as constepation, diarrhea, gas, etc.
Three weeks ago, I went to Urgent Care for what I thought was bruised ribs, only to be sent to the ER, due to not only bruised ribs, but also a concussion, blood in my urine and a bleeding gastric ulcer.
So I very much recommend you finding a gastroenterologist NOW, right at the start of anything uncomfortable. It’ll probably help you in the long run!
Unfortunately, no one has ever been able to find me a gastroenterologist who specializes in Parkinson’s!
