My Mother Is Having Balance Issues But Won't Use Her Walker
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My mother has been losing her balance frequently and falling - to the point where she has had to be taken to the hospital twice in the last couple of months. Most of these falls could be prevented if she would use her walker. In the past, she hasn't wanted to use it - more for vanity reasons. It wasn't a big deal because she was careful and her falls were infrequent. But now, with her balance issues becoming much worse recently she needs to use it all of the time. As a Health Home Care Manager, this is a fairly difficult topic that comes up repeatedly. I ask my members would they prefer to maintain their ability to walk with support or end up falling and breaking a hip. I tell it like it is because the reality is they are hospitalized for a month or longer and then go into a rehab and sometimes are never able to live independently again. If they do return home,, Once h they appear to be far worse afterwards than if they had never fallen. My one lady's daughter actually had a leash attached to the walker so she would get up and use it. Sounds horrible, but after that she has not fallen even once and ow thanks her daughter for helping her to remember it ivis there for when she wants or needs to walk and to keep her safe.

Finally, a year ago last January, I broke my back. I could not walk at all and was in the worst pain I ever could have imagined to be inv24/7. I had to use my walker for almost a full year. Yes at first, I was embarrassed but it kept me safe when having to walk.

Ask your mother if she would rather be having surgery and possibly not be able to walk at all.
I’ve undergone 5 hip replacement surgeries,, months of rehab ,possible life threatening Infections because of two falls without a walker I’m 72
Good luck

Is her blood pressure low? Orthostatic hypotension bothers many PD patients.

It is hard to convince someone to use their walker. Maybe it could be decorated somehow or customize it with a short skirt around it???
