What Should I Discuss With My Doc When Thinking Of Applying For Disability?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi All,

I'm considering applying for at least partial disability. Anyone have any advice for what to ask or what documentation I should ask them to prepare?

Thank you!

First get all your medical files from your Neuro doctor . Go over them underline items in your favor . See if he or she has assigned a rating to you if not let him know your applying . If you think you are unable to work then you’re totally disabled if I can help any further email me (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) please put Parkinson’s in header I’m 100 percent disabled

I applied first for state disability and they recommended that I immediately assemble information for SSDI. I submitted a short questionaire online with Social Security and I received a notification that a disability attorney would be contacting me. In response to my diagnosis, they said that often times the first 1-2 requests may get denied, but in the case of some diagnosis, they will by pass the denial if the paperwork is submitted by an attorney. They approved me for full disability within 4 months ( the attorney was surprised ) and I did not have to pay for the attorney. It was very stress free.

You have to be denied, before you get a lawyer to file on your behalf.

I talked to 3 lawyers before I applied, and everyone of them suggested that they couldn't help me until I was denied. just a heads up....

I absolutely agree re the lawyer. Lots of people think you don’t need one, but they know exactly what records etc to submit, and will get you an award, when the SS is trying to turn down everyone. Good luck!
