Don't Over Do Exercise Question
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question đź’

I am caregiver to spouse. From the outside looking in, PT and OT help SO MUCH, but I keep seeing the comment on My Parkinson's Team of "don't overdo" -- how do I figure out what's too much for him? I saw the good that came out of PT and she had him doing WAY more than I would have ever thought possible; however, now that it is over and we are trying to exercise at home, I also see how tired he is the day after we exercise at home. It is really hard because he doesn't seem to be able to express… read more

How much is too much can change on a daily basis. I would try for 30 to 45 minutes five days a week if at all possible. That is the usual recipe for good health. My husband's doctor has encouraged him to do that. More if he wants to do more. If he does too much and is exhausted or in pain, the next day rest. If he is consistently too tired, then cut back. Usually exercise should give energy, not destroy it. Doing nothing just saps energy completely.

I just had a thought. When we exercise our breathing changes. You should be able to tell when he has exercised enough and rest. His breathing should fast and his face may turn red. You'll have to take note how his breathing is rested and how it changes as he exercises.

In addition to the above...Parkinson's accelerates muscle atrophy...laying around being a couch potato will add more atrophy. My grandmother died of Parkinson's, first she lost her speech, then mobility, then she curled up into a fetal position and forgot how to swallow and died. She did not exercise at all. it took five years for Parkinson's to kill her. It was horrible. Now I know what my father needs... exercise and social interaction, besides the meds. it is vital. To much exercise is better than to little.

Your welcome. The auto correct sometimes makes my posts unreadable. Ugh!

I trust the Neurologist, Physical and Occupational Therapist. My dad complains he is sore and too tired to exercise, but he gets better if he does push through and does therapy. The hard part is getting my dad to do it. once he does though he feels tired but better over all. Look to professionals for help.
