People with PD may be at higher risk of skin cancer, so PWP should probably get checked by a dermatologist more often and be on the lookout for suspicious spots.
People with Parkinson's Disease are at higher risk of developing melanoma. I once asked my husband's Neuro if this is because of PD's relation to the substantia nigra in the brain, which is an area of high concentration of melanin. She indicated that this is the reason for the increased risk of this particular skin cancer (also related to melanin). So though PD may not actually CAUSE skin cancer, there is a correlation present, and people with Parkinson's are at higher risk for developing melanoma than people without PD.
It’s not Parkinson’s that increases the risk for melanomas but the carbadopa/levodopa does. There is a caution about this in the literature that comes with the medicine.
The meds may cause melanoma my neurologist suggested using a good sunscreen and I see skin dr once year to check for it.
I had a small spot on my head removed a couple of years ago. Just recently started with the PD journey.
