Freaking Out A Bit
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

Apologies up front, but I'm kind of freaking out. Seeing my neuro in a few weeks and thinking of starting medication. Tremors are getting worse but the side effects of meds make me nervous. Saw my GP dr last week and she asked why I was not on meds yet and she went into how this isn't going to get any better, it'll only get worse until my body shuts down and I'll be "locked in" within a few years. I'm 62 years old and on my own. I work full time and don't have an option of retirement. I was… read more

You’re GP was a little over dramatic about your prognosis.

The term “Locked in”. Doesn’t apply to Parkinson’s. Some people with Parkinson’s may appear to be very distant. Parkinson’s causes a flat effect on some patients faces, but those people will engage same as anyone else.

Medication won’t change anything anyways. It treats your symptoms and makes life better for you. The only thing that will affect the disease itself is exercise, and that can reverse where you are in the disease. Many people have improved with exercise.

Medication is very important for helping with your symptoms. Parkinson’s symptoms can interfere greatly with living your best life. You may not even know that some of the things you’re feeling are being caused by Parkinson’s until you take the medication.

Find a new GP! What she said to you is horrible! I only know that my husband has been much happier since he started meds.

I had terrible nausea when my carbidopa-levodopa was increased to the 125/100 level. My neurologist put me on a kind that dissolves in my mouth rather than being swallowed with water. No more nausea! I take 5 a Day, every four hours starting at 6 am.

I started the carbidova levodopa and it has helped me with my tremors. I started it in November and in March. I did have to go up on dosage a little bit but that’s OK little bit you need to just relax. This is a very I should say this can be a very scary diagnosis but there’s plenty of information out there and we can fight it. We can fight the progression and that’s what we’ll do. Will be strong will take whatever medication‘s we need to take if cinemad is not for you maybe they’ll have another suggestion on a medication that will help. Get it and valved in some kind of physical activity every day every other day. Keep moving keep moving constantly moving don’t slow down that’s the best advice I can give you.

I was going down-hill for several years before diagnosis & meds. Meds allowed me to move better so I was able to exercise more (once again) and had the added impetus of knowing it (exercise) was the only real treatment. 3 1/2 yrs on I'm in the best shape I've been in for maybe 20 yrs. Even if meds don't slow progression, the exercise they may allow you to do very likely will.
