My dad's diagnosis is still new and I'm trying to figure out how to best support him emotionally and physically. What a BLESSING you are to your Father. You are doing all the right things and will learn more. There are many postings from the Davis Phinney Foundation that will be helpful. Rather than asking the "How are you???" question, try saying something complimentary such as, "That shirt you are wearing in one of my favorites." or "You look especially rested today." or "It is a great day for a walk. May I go with you?" You get the drift. Again, BLESSINGS for being such a caring daughter!
Encourage him to be as active as possible. Joining an exercise class like Rock Steady Boxing or doing physical therapy can make a big difference.
On the Davis Phinney Foundation website there is a book called, Every Victory Counts. It is a very comprehensive book on Parkinson's and includes a version for caregivers. You can read it online or order it and just pay postage/donation. There are sections that include checklists of things to consider before doctor's appointments etc. Check it out.
