I’m 48 (almost) and was diagnosed at 36, had DBS about 5 years ago. My wife and I are going on an Alaskan cruise and it will be the first cruise and first time flying since DBS. I use a cane to walk and a wheelchair for long distances. Any advice for navigating the airports or general travel advice?
I had DBS 3 years ago and so when I started traveling again last year I would bring my foldable walking sticks in my carry on. On my way back, one of the security places took the walking stick away. It is ok in the checked in. Check to make sure your airline(s) allow a cane. If u have bladder worries, wear Depends, in case. And reserve and aisle seat near the washroom. Keep meds in carry-on. Bring much more than u need, in case. Bring a printed out list of your prescriptions including descriptions and DIN #'s.
Earlier this year my walking was good in the airports but when I arrived in Thailand, exhausted, my walk was that of someone having difficulty. A guy pushing an empty wheelchair offered me a ride. I had to tip because it was a local and not guest services. Hurt my pride but sure enough I went past the lineup to the handicap line, which was empty. I flew through that arrival station it was the only time I had no slow down with my Visa and medical insurance. The officer okayed things relatively quickly as it should be.
Good question?
Most of what you need to know about most topics including travel
can be found online:

Have a FUN and safe trip!
When you get to the airport, call guest services and have them get you a wheelchair. You'll get to be first in every line, and first to board the plane.
That is all great information I hadn't thought of.
Thank you!
