Apokyn Injectable -about To Start On It. Anyone Use This Drug?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My sister is about to start Apokyn which is a rescue drug that is injected( like diabetes’ injectable with small thin needle that doesn’t hurt). It supposed to kick in within 10-20 minutes and last about an hour while other carbidopa-levodopa kicks in ( takes about an hour for that). Anyone have experience with this drug?

I was on Apokyn injections for 4 1/2 years. It works really well as a rescue. I know everybody’s journeys different here, so this is my journey. I was taking the injections, the Neupro patch and Rytary, along with several other medication’s for depression is anxiety. What I discovered was it I was over medicated. We all know the side effects of the Parkinson’s medication can cause worse effects on your body like tightening spells causing my anxiety to kick in, and I would have a panic attack at the same time. I would give myself injection 15-20 minutes later I was much better. They tell you this medication is not habit forming , but it is. Trust me. I also went to the hospital emergency room to have emergency appendectomy, and they were having problems, trying to figure out what medications I was able to have that we’re not conflict with the Apokyn. It was quite scary. I made a choice to quit Apokyn. injection -I decrease half my medication’s, which decreased the tighning spells, which decreased. my panic attacks. Consult with your doctor as always proceed with caution with this medication. The doctor once told me that take care of your anxiety and your Parkinson’s will fall into place. 🙏💜

Yes. She has undergone Apomorphine challenge test , under the supervision of her Movement Disorder Specialist . ( Neurologist with Specialization in PD treatment) Prior to Challenge test , she has to undergo blood test /ECG/Echo /Ultrasound test for Liver . The test result have to be positive. Only after that Apomorphine challenge test is tried on her . She tolerated the test well . She was advised Apomorphine Injection as a rescue therapy for OFF time..

We live in India . It is known as Aposan injectable in India. My wife with Parkinson takes 0.25 ml of Aposan Subcutaneous injection 3 to 4 times in a day. It has been a month now. I give her the injection. It is a great help. Relieves her of OFF within 10 minutes , giving an ON period of 60 minutes. Sometimes it may take 20 minutes to come ON. Absorption is faster if given in the abdomen. Other recommended areas are thighs & Arms. All the best.

Yes - my sister was taking Kynmobi as a rescue does, it’s a dissolving thin strip that goes under the toungue. It was excellent but they stopped manufacturing it due to small number of users—- so Neurologist suggested Apokyn since it contains same stuff but is taken by subcutaneous injection- blood pressure tests and titrations dosage is involved
