I gave up driving a couple of years ago and sold my car. I hate having to find rides but I couldn't live with myself if I injured or killed someone just because I wanted to keep my freedom,

I quit when we moved to a senior living facility. This was one of the main reasons I decided to sell our place and move. My husband wasn't thrilled with me deciding to no longer drive but he had not driven in at least 3 years. But I felt although I could still drive I really did not want to anymore. And the place we moved to took us shopping and to doctor appointments. After the first year I decided to donate our SUV to the facility.

My husband was diagnosed at 68 in 2021 and took a two-part driving evaluation. He passed but then he hit a pole in a parking lot that was partially obscured and totaled his car. Although it arguably wasn’t his fault, he decided to stop almost all driving. Even though I work full-time, I now take him to his medical appointments and do most of the driving, and he just does errands within 10 minutes from home in the daylight. He felt it was the right decision and I’m proud of him for making it. Now if I could only convince him to use Uber! ~Diana

I guess I should clarify my earlier response. I gave up driving many, many years ago, but the State of California continues to renew my license every 4 years, because I have a perfect driving history! 😇

Dear David Bryd, You are lucky that your son can come to you about anything. It may seem harsh, but it is better than if he kept your grandchildren away from you altogether. Hugs, AnneKristine
