Christmas is a time of music and I would like to sing along with some carols. Unfortunately, I cannot sing at all now after singing in a choir for 60 years. I don't mean singing off key. I mean nothing comes out half the time. I am worried that I will not be able to talk at all soon. What can I do about this?

Hi. I found it hard to play the guitar so I now play the ukulele. The chords are easier to do. I still sing but in a lower tone now and I still do karaoke ( which I am doing tonight). I do cardio every day and I’m off to my boxing class now. I just try to stay active. I still do my favourite pastime which is surfing.

Hi Roxie, As other members of this community have said, loss of speech comes with swallowing and vocal cord problems associated with PD. Sadly, the primary suggestion in the research is speech therapy. The impact of therapy varies among people with PD and when there is improvement, it is sometimes short lived. Keeping your throat moistened and exercising the mouth and throat muscles has been reported s helping with voice issues.

I wish there was more info and better outcomes reported for voice reduction but I did not find anything like that at this time, I'm sorry. My husband was blessed with a love for music and a wonderful voice. Sadly he married me who could not carry a tune in a bucket. He was more saddened by loosing his ability to sing than he was by losing his hair while being treated for cancer.

Please don't be sad or give up. A speech therapist might have some great info for you so ask your doc to refer you to one. The therapist may also be able to help with swallowing problems you may have now or experience in the future.

I'm sending hugs and prayers to you. Please keep us posted.
