I was once considered a woodworker. I built everything from cabinets to clockcases and caskets. Now I would be classified by those in a construction trade as a wood butcher.

Yesterday I worked with one of my granddaughters who wanted to make pens on my lathe. I tried to show her how to do things and instead ended up with a fluted pen. Not intentionally but as my hand shook the chiseled dug in enough that it turned out fluted.

Phil, you've received a lot of good suggestions for your shop. I'm envious of anyone who can still use these tools.

It sounds like what you're looking for is a combination table saw and circular saw. I have seen contraptions where people could mount a circular saw upside down in a table and use it both as a table saw or removing it when they want to be able to use it as a circular saw. What I would recommend is a track saw. It is safe and can be used for ripping, cutting bevels or crosscuts.

There is also a tool called the Shopsmith, it can be used to do just about anything that a skilled woodworker needs. New it sells for around 5K US, older used ones go for considerably less.

Table router. I had one, when I was more than just a collection of symptoms. Nothing else added as much to my woodworking...they are so versatile, making the simple rounding of profiles a dream, and simplifying complex joints greatly.

Big difference between DIY construction and hobby/cabinet making projects. For the former, I would say a compound miter saw. For the latter, table saw.
