Do you know if your employer can fire you for having Parkinson's in a high stress and mentally intense government job? I hope to file FMLA papers yearly until I am able to retire. I have only told my supervisor about my diagnosis because I broke out crying while trying to arrange HR meeting for FMLA. I still have a minimum of 3 years to work.
I struggled with this when I was diagnosed. At the time it was a toss up on how to handle it due to the management we had at the time. I needed to keep my insurance which meant I needed my job. After a lot of thinking ,I decided to have my FMLA papers completed BEFORE I told them so every thing was spelled out for them. My supervisor would have my back, but the HR lady was a B****. I got the FMLA papers filled out and my supervisor set up a meeting with HR. She was in 100% B**** mode. My supervisor left on vacation the next day (he wanted to make sure I was "covered" before he took his vacation) Sure enough, I was called to HR first thing in the morning. I'm not going to go into that meeting. You know how every job has that person that will go tell the supervisors every little thing that is none of their business. After my HR meeting. I ran into "that person" He asked me why I had to go to HR 2 days in a row. I told him I had Parkinson's and HR wasn't too happy about it' I also told him Parkinson's is covered under the Americans with disability act and there were plenty of lawyers that would take my case pro bono. (I have no idea if Parkinson's is covered under the Americans with disability act) Heard from a supervisor that the office was in an uproar after "the person" told them exactly what I had told him. HR lady was given some choices (she had given me choices) She chose to resign.
I hope there is no drama involved when you tell them. I would talk to a higher up that I trusted and know that they would have my back. Ask them what they would do. You are going to need FMLA papers in file anyway so I would have them in hand
