First question on the forum (also a note to the doctor) I feel that in the past few weeks (which included a trip to Europe lots of walking) I’ve noticed more walking on my toes, feeling like my balance is forward and having to set my feet to keep my balance.

Practice walking heel to toe, deliberately. Also focus on standing tall/straight. My husband leans forward and walks on his toes. It can lead to festinating which leads to falls. I try to stop him before he starts the quick forward steps and stand straight, and so far we're doing well. I can't get him to practice the heel toe walking, which would make a difference, I think.

To address balance and walking issues, including forward leaning, here are some strategies and tips based on my knowledge base:

1. Practice Balance-Improving Techniques:
- Sit-to-stand exercise: Repeatedly practice sitting down in a chair and standing up with a sturdy support like a countertop or table in front of you.
- Balance exercise: Practice stepping side to side next to a table with someone to assist you if needed.

2. Overcome Freezing and Balance Loss:
- Swing both arms while walking to maintain balance.
- Walk to a regular beat, like music or a metronome, to prevent freezing.
- Consciously lift your feet and imagine stepping over a laser while walking.
- Use a “U” technique for turns, imagining walking in a U shape instead of pivoting sharply.
- Focus on one task at a time and move slowly when changing positions, counting to 15 seconds between each movement.

3. Consider Walking Aids or Home Adaptations:
- Use a cane or walker to help keep your balance and stay steady while walking.
- Make home adaptations like removing tripping hazards, adding grab bars in the bathroom, ensuring bright lighting, and clearing clutter from walking paths.

4. Try Physical Therapy:
- Work with a physical or occupational therapist to improve balance and gait. They can assess your risk of falls and help improve your walking, posture, and balance through various exercises.

Always consult with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting any new exercise regimen or making significant changes to your routine.
