It may depend on how off balance you are. My husband just uses a tall wooden stick with a rubber bottom when he is walking or going down stairs. It adds an extra point of reference, which helps him. He doesn't actually put much weight on it, though it is sturdy enough he can if necessary. We used hiking poles for years when hiking and they saved us from many falls, but the narrow point isn't as good on streets and stairs as the wider wooden pole.
