Up to 19 percent of people living with Parkinson's already have mild cognitive impairment (MCI) when first diagnosed with the condition. The progression from MCI to dementia can be quite gradual - it may take up to 20 years for cognitive impairment to advance to dementia. While the exact cause of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's isn't fully understood, research suggests that sleep issues common in Parkinson's may be associated with cognitive decline.
