From what I understand, he had the surgery to correct the left-side tremors, but when the tremors started on the right side he decided against anymore surgeries unless the doctors can guarantee a cure rather than a slowdown of progression. His symptoms are so significant and disruptive to his daily life that he's stopped doing television. Again, this is only what I've read about his experiences with PD; everyone here seems to "know" some variation on the truth; I'm no different.

That surprises me. I recently saw the film he made of his life, "Still", and his dyskinesia and tremors are really bad. DBS usually helps with both.

Wikipedia says he had a thalamotomy in 1998, which isn't the same as DBS. Another article I read said that he didn't want to do DBS because he didn't want the contraption. The surgery he had just killed a part of the brain that caused tremors but didn't have a stimulator. Another article said he had had DBS. Mixed answers.
