I thought it might be from the Entacapone I was taking because I started that around the same time, so I stopped it for a few months but that just made my off time worse. The other thing that happens occasionally on my off times is I get really bad shaking, like having chills but not being cold, as well as sometimes painful muscle contractions in my arms and legs. These episodes are terrible and thankfully so far don’t happen too often, but the underlying feeling that my body is not turning off… read more

Thanks for your reply, it’s helpful knowing I’m not the only one. I’m still hoping to find the magic trick to turn off my body so I can get some rest.

I don't understand it either. Not long after my diagnosis, I went from 168 to 134 in about three months. I lost so much muscle so quickly I could hardly carry my weight. Starting a workout program was a real job.
The doctor told me my weight loss was because my muscles were always tight and twitching. I managed to get my weight back up to about 147, where I am now and I work out almost every day. without losing any weight. I guess it's just part of PD.

Have you experienced weight loss with Parkinson's disease?

Yes, weight loss is a real concern many MyParkinsonsTeam members face, and your observation about constant movement burning calories is spot-on.

Why Weight Loss Happens

Dyskinesia, which causes involuntary movements like twitching, jerking, and writhing, can lead to significant weight loss because you're moving constantly and burning extra calories. One member shared, "I have a huge problem with weight loss and have been told it's from the dyskinesia." Another noted, "Weight loss happens if you never stop moving 24/7."

Your "Off" Time Symptoms

The shaking, chills without being cold, and painful muscle contractions you're experiencing during "off" times are common symptoms when medication wears off. These can include:

- Tremors and severe shaking
- Cramping (dystonia) - those painful muscle contractions
- Stiffness
- Increased movement

What You Can Do

Since stopping Entacapone made your "off" time worse, it's worth discussing with your doctor about:

- Adjusting your medication timing or dosage
- Adding medications to help smooth out the "on/off" periods
- Managing the balance between controlling symptoms and minimizing dyskinesia

The constant feeling that your body won't "turn off" suggests you may be experiencing ongoing motor fluctuations that need attention from your healthcare team.
