AI pretty much covered it, I think. One of the meds that my husband tried said, very clearly, that alcohol should not be taken with the medication. I don't think his c-l has that warning, but I haven't looked for a while. He stopped drinking years ago because his brain was foggy enough without adding alcohol to the mix.

How should you approach drinking alcohol during the holidays with Parkinson's?

The holidays can be tricky when it comes to alcohol and Parkinson's. Here are some key things to consider:

How Alcohol Affects Your Symptoms:

Studies show mixed results, but alcohol can impair motor control and increase fall risk. Some research suggests liquor consumption may increase PD risk more than wine, though one to two glasses of red wine might be a healthier choice if you do drink.

Medication Interactions:

This is really important. Alcohol can interfere with levodopa medications and make them stop working effectively. Many neurologists recommend avoiding alcohol while taking [[treatment:levodopa/carbidopa:55d534f51fcaa397470006dd]]. As a MyParkinsonsTeam member shared, "I found that it just makes my meds stop working."

If you do drink, consider timing it 30 minutes before or 60 minutes after taking your medication.

Practical Holiday Tips:

* Limit yourself to one drink if you choose to have alcohol
* Try alcohol-free alternatives - as one member noted, "I had an alcohol-free beer, which tasted OK, to be honest"
* Listen to your body and notice how you feel
* Talk openly with your neurologist about your specific situation

The most important thing is being honest with yourself and your doctor about your habits so you can make the safest choices for your health.
