Are you experiencing a loss of voice volume that makes it difficult for others to understand you?
Voice changes like speaking quietly or with a breathy tone are very common with Parkinson's. This happens because the condition affects the muscles used for speaking, including those in your rib cage, diaphragm, and voice box. Many people find their voice gets softer as the day goes on or even while they're speaking.
What makes this particularly challenging is that you might not realize how quietly you're speaking - your voice may sound normal to you even when others are struggling to hear you. The good news is that speech therapy can really help. Here are some approaches that have worked for others:
Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD) - This specialized program helps you speak louder and more clearly. Members who've completed it report significant improvements, though daily practice is essential to maintain results.
Practical strategies:
- Schedule vocal rests before important conversations
- Meet people in quiet spaces where they can see your face
- Speak in short phrases rather than long sentences
- Try vocal exercises or music therapy
- Consider using a personal amplifier or the SpeechVive earpiece
One member shared: "I chant the Ramones chorus of 'Hey! Ho! Let's Go!' to pump up my voice before I get on a phone call."
Talk to your doctor or neurologist about getting a referral to a speech-language pathologist. Starting treatment early often leads to better results in maintaining a stronger voice as Parkinson's progresses.
