Members shared mixed experiences with amantadine for Parkinson's disease, with some finding it helpful for dyskinesia while others discontinued it due to worsening motor skills or lack of noticeable benefit. Several members discussed the high cost and insurance coverage challenges, with one noting that Walmart offers a more affordable option at $13.99, while another successfully used pramipexole as a covered alternative. A recurring theme was the complexity of managing Parkinson's alongside other conditions, with community members offering prayers and support to those struggling with additional challenges like ME/CFS.

What is amantadine?

Amantadine is a medication used to help manage Parkinson's symptoms, particularly tremors and dyskinesia (involuntary movements that can occur as a side effect of levodopa treatment). It works by increasing the amount of dopamine available in the brain and potentially blocking signals that cause overactive muscle movements.

Common formulations:

* Gocovri (extended-release)
* Osmolex ER (extended-release)

All formulations are taken orally.

How it's used:

Amantadine can be taken alone or combined with [[treatment:levodopa/carbidopa:55d534f51fcaa397470006dd]] medications. It's particularly helpful for reducing levodopa-induced dyskinesia while still managing your Parkinson's symptoms effectively.

When it might be prescribed:

Your doctor may recommend amantadine if you're experiencing dyskinesia from long-term levodopa use, or to help control tremors. It's FDA-approved specifically for treating levodopa-induced dyskinesia.

If you're considering amantadine or have questions about whether it might help your symptoms, discussing your specific situation with your neurologist or healthcare provider can help determine if it's the right option for you.

I took it for a short time but. I couldn’t tolerate it …I think it was because it made my motor skills worse!

Amantadine works we'll for me. I no longer have health insurance (,long story) but.as far as the expense, walmart filled my prescription for 13.99.
