Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that shares several characteristics with Parkinson's disease but is its own distinct condition. It affects about 4.4 cases per 100,000 people, typically appearing in those over 40.
MSA is sometimes called "atypical parkinsonism" or "Parkinson's plus" because it has motor symptoms similar to Parkinson's but also includes additional features. The condition affects both the movement system and the autonomic nervous system (which controls involuntary actions like digestion, blood pressure, and bladder function).
Key differences from Parkinson's:
- MSA progresses more quickly than Parkinson's disease
- Autonomic problems (bladder issues, blood pressure changes, excessive sweating) are usually more severe and appear earlier
- Balance difficulties and poor posture often occur at an earlier stage
- MSA stops responding to Parkinson's medications sooner
Two types of MSA:
- MSA-P (Parkinsonian type): Includes slow movement, tremor, stiffness, plus balance and coordination problems
- MSA-C (Cerebellar type): Features prominent balance and coordination issues, swallowing difficulties, speech problems, and abnormal eye movements
The early symptoms of MSA can be hard to distinguish from Parkinson's, including slow movement, stiffness, tremor, impaired speech, and clumsiness. However, MSA typically progresses faster, with most people developing severe disabilities within three to five years of diagnosis.
