Backward falls are a real concern with Parkinson's, especially as postural instability develops. The good news is there are practical strategies that can help reduce this risk significantly.

Speaking with a doctor or physical therapist is a great first step. They can assess balance, review medications that might be contributing to unsteadiness, and recommend a personalized exercise plan. Here are some key strategies to help prevent backward falls:

- Exercise regularly — Tai chi, yoga, qigong, and walking are especially helpful for improving balance and stability
- Practice sit-to-stand exercises — Repeatedly sitting and standing with a sturdy support nearby builds strength and control
- Move slowly when changing positions — Try counting to 15 between movements like sitting or standing
- Swing both arms while walking — This helps maintain balance and forward momentum
- Use a walker or cane — As one MyParkinsonsTeam member shared, using a walker significantly reduced their falls and allowed them to walk longer distances
- Keep your home safe — Remove rugs, add grab bars, ensure good lighting, and keep walkways clear of clutter
- Focus on one task at a time — Avoid multitasking while moving, as divided attention increases fall risk Physical therapy is particularly valuable here. A therapist can teach specific techniques tailored to individual symptoms and stages of Parkinson's. Bringing a caregiver or family member to sessions can also help reinforce exercises at home.

Always consult a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine.
