Members responded warmly to a question about low vitamin D levels, with many confirming it is a very common issue for people living with Parkinson's disease. Several members shared that reduced time outdoors, age, diet, and how the body processes vitamin D can all contribute to low levels, and many noted they take prescribed supplements to help. A recurring theme was the importance of talking with your doctor, getting blood work done regularly, and celebrating small wins like improved numbers, all while supporting one another through the challenges of managing Parkinson's.

It is a common occurrence in patients with Parkinson's to have low vitamin D levels. I have read a lot about that. Always check with your doctor about your concerns.

To Susan Brown: I have had years of issues with anemia and vitamin D deficiency. I was referred to an oncologist who told me to double my iron but only take every other day. He said something about it working better if taken every other day. Initially my iron levels increased but red blood cells were way "too small". Now,, over time it seems the anemia has gotten just to the point of being normal after the new regimen. When I was at my worst I had trouble breathing, my legs would drain of energy when I walked a few steps and I felt weak. I'm giving symptoms since I had no idea it was an iron deficiency.

My doctor said the amount of vitamin D one gets from the sun and vegetables is insufficient for seniors with Parkinson's disease and put me on Vitamin D pills 25mcg a day. Definitely feel better with these.

Good luck to all!

I have low iron along with anemia. I take Vitamin D every day along with iron. Because of some medications I am taking I cannot be in the sunlight for any length of time.

It'svery common , it took me two years to get my vitamin D level to just over 30 . Parkinson disease is a autoimmune disease , at least most of my doctors believe it is . I have to get shots every year for just about everything that out there that I might catch , and if you read the articles on this website , you'll find that now our medicine 💊 is depleting our vitamin B levels as well . Which can lead to having seizures .
