Shilajit is a dark, sticky, mineral-rich substance found in mountain rocks. It has been used for many years in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. People usually take it hoping it will help with energy, stamina, memory, inflammation, or their general health.

Some people may say it helps them feel better or gives them more energy, but that is personal experience. There is currently no good human evidence showing that shilajit treats Parkinson’s or Parkinsonism, replaces dopamine, or slows the progression of the disease.

There are also some safety concerns. Raw or poorly tested shilajit may contain heavy metals such as lead, mercury, or arsenic. It may cause dizziness, stomach problems, allergic reactions, or changes in blood pressure. It could also interact with medications.

Before trying shilajit—or any supplement like this—definitely talk with your doctor first. Your doctor knows your health, your medications, and your medical history better than anyone. What may be safe for one person may not be safe for another.

Has anyone with Parkinson's tried Shilajit and found it helpful?

Shilajit is a natural resin-like substance found in mountain rocks, particularly in the Himalayas. It's been used in traditional medicine for centuries and contains a compound called fulvic acid, which some researchers believe may have neuroprotective properties.

There is some early-stage research suggesting it *might* have potential benefits related to brain health, including:

- Antioxidant properties that could help protect brain cells
- Anti-inflammatory effects
- Possible support for mitochondrial function, which is relevant to Parkinson's

However, it's really important to note a few things:

- There is no strong clinical evidence specifically supporting Shilajit as a treatment for Parkinson's symptoms
- It can interact with medications, including some commonly used in Parkinson's management
- Quality and purity of supplements can vary widely

Some MyParkinsonsTeam members have mentioned trying various natural supplements out of curiosity, with mixed results and experiences.

Before trying Shilajit, it's strongly recommended to speak with your neurologist or movement disorder specialist. They can help weigh any potential benefits against risks, especially given your current treatment plan.
