Has your sense of smell changed? When you can't smell food, it tastes different. Loss of smell and taste is one of the many parkinson's symptoms. Not everyone gets it though. The Michael J. Fox Foundation had a smell test they sent out to rate your ability to smell. I am part of the PPMI group so I did the test. It was interesting. Some were easy to distinguish, others not so much.

I have a taste impairment. I can’t eat meat, but rather chicken and seafood. I can’t eat lettuce. Most diet sodas aren’t as enjoyable as they once were. I mostly drink water, sparkling water or seltzer. I can’t drink coffee or tea. Sometimes it’s hard trying to find things to eat for lunch or dinner.

Can loss of taste be a symptom of Parkinson's disease? Yes, it can be.
Parkinson's can affect the senses, including taste. Some people notice that food tastes different, less flavorful, or just not the same as it used to. This is sometimes called taste alteration or reduced taste sensitivity. This change in taste can lead to a few knock-on effects, including:
- Changed food preferences — foods you once enjoyed may no longer appeal to you
- Decreased appetite — if food doesn't taste good, it's hard to feel motivated to eat
- Difficulty maintaining a balanced diet — which can affect overall health and energy levels
It's worth mentioning this to your doctor or a dietitian, especially if it's affecting how much or what you're eating. Keeping nutrition on track is really important when managing Parkinson's.
