Ropinirole (brand name Requip) is a dopamine agonist used to treat motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. It works by mimicking dopamine in the brain, making brain cells more responsive to it.

It can be used on its own in early Parkinson's, or alongside levodopa/carbidopa to help manage symptoms more effectively. Like all dopamine agonists, ropinirole comes with some side effects to be aware of:

- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Heart issues, such as irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure
- Compulsive behaviors (like gambling, shopping, or binge-eating)

That last point is worth taking seriously. Research has shown that ropinirole carries one of the higher risks of impulse-control disorders among dopamine agonists. Higher doses or longer use can increase this risk.

It's always a good idea to discuss these risks openly with your doctor, especially if you or those close to you notice any behavioral changes.
