Is My Experience With The DBS Process Normal (it Will Be A One Yr Process)?
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I contacted my neurologist in early April 2015 telling him that I wanted to proceed with the DBS which he has advocated for me for several years. I went thru a battery of tests in early September but since then I have not heard a word from anyone in this institution. Calls to this "prestigious" institution or their Drs are never returned. By chance, I went to my Patient Portal and found that I have an appt with a neurosurgeon on Jan 14. I assume it will be a few months after that before I… read more

Thanks Linda. There are two surgeons and they only do DBS on Mondays. If they have to do both sides then they only do one patient per day. If just one sidee then two surgeries per day. But, that is still only a maximum of 4 per week which is not that many for the size of Atlanta and the outskirts this hospital serves. I will definitely keep you posted but for now the brain surgery is on hold until my cardiac surgery is performed in mid-February. I will be a new man when 2016 is over!!!

Dad just had his battery fixed a few weeks ago and it was like flipping on a lightswitch. His voice and diaphragm strength came back immediately. His incontinence is better, and he is walking better. I am so glad DBS came our way. WORTH IT!

I made it thru cardiac surgery with flying colors. Surgery to repair valve and aorta was last Thursday and I was back home on Tuesday. The neurosurgeon called Monday to schedule the DBS, I think I need a few months to heal and gain strength before the next surgery. Thanks for all your prayers and positive thoughts.

My Dad had great results with the DBS. Helped immensely with his painful rigidity. Unfortunately he had a bad car accident a few months afterwards and broke 13 vertebrae in his back, so that meant months of rehab and a major setback. Still, the pacemaker is helping and despite all that he is in better shape than he would have been without the surgery, even 4 years later. Hope that's encouraging for you!
