Any Ideas For Excersizes, I Walk With A Cane.
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

I realize the importance of exercise with PD. Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises that I can try? I have a bad knee and back and and no balance and have to walk with a cane. I haven't been able to find exercises that I can do standing. I only do leg lifts when I'm sitting in a chair and leg lifts and leg bends when I'm laying down. I have very limited movement in my left knee. I also use 3 pound weights for my arms. I can't stand longer than 5 minutes at a time and can't walk far at… read more

I have found walking poles helpful. They make you stand upright with dual support - good luck

I go to Silver Sneakers 2 x week. Yes - you can work out in a chair - for sure! And you'll meet a bunch of really nice folks, too. Some are simply older and in great shape and just enjoy the non-aerobic exercise, others have hip, knee and foot problems, and we have a few who come with walkers and canes and do the exercises seated the whole time. We all have a great time together and we've become a sort of family. If someone is missing from class we all become concerned and check up on them.

Funny story - one elderly man who barely managed to make it to his chair with his cane (not a PD patient), and had been attending regularly for quite a while stopped coming. We were all so concerned that he had fallen or, worse, had passed away. We all had a good laugh when we found out he had moved to a lovely Assisted Living high rise here in town and was having the time of his life! They have exercise classes, pool classes and group activities and he's happy as a lark. Haha!

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your Silver Sneakers card - can't wait to hear if you like it! I hope you have a good day...Judi

Hi Lisa, I also have a problem with one of my knees. The exercise I would rather do is on a little piece of equipment I got at Walmart for about $25.00. You can sit in a chair and pedal it like a bike. It is light weight and about 12 inches high. I sometimes sit it on my counter and pedal with my arms and it gives my upper body some good exercise. It has been well worth the $25.00. It has a small stamp on it that says "Stamina".. I have a number you could call for more information. (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators). It may be something you could use without having to bend your knee too much.
