@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member, I know what you mean.. and it takes so much energy to peel myself off my couch , get showered, choose an appropriate outfit, dress and make up and put on a happy face. I have been fighting this disease for 15 years now and have faced all types of rejections: from being told,"why would i date a disabled woman, when i can choose from so many abled ones"? to watching mens faces fall when i walk in to greet them. it is hard to stay upbeat and feeling worthy of love when ppl can be so biased and cruel. I think the only thing we can do is keep working on ourselves, including our mental health, which may involve using life tools or medications if the side effects are worth the benefit (and i have not found an antidepressant yet that doesnt have negative side effects, such as a fall in libido and anorgasmia which are essential quality of life issues that become even more important when dating)
I think if i were to talk to myself when newly diagnosed 15 years ago, i would have told Catty not to settle, not to fear the future, and not to look for a companion who would help her lift her burden of responsibility bur rather be very selective about those people chosen to be in her friends group. i have found it helps to think that i am building a group of friends, and then get busy and stay active in local social groups such as workout and activity groups found online, rather than finding a partner/companion for life. This removes the anxiety of thoughts such as '"what if i die alone?" and "i will never find my soul mate" and put that energy to better use in living in the moment., living a good life in spite of (or maybe because of) having a progressive neurological disease for which there is no cure despite predictions of a cure so close i can taste it
fill out and do that bucket list. set daily weekly and monthly goals. Travel as best you can. Keep family and loyal friends in your life;it takes work to maintain relationships but it is worth it.
And you may be surprised to find the secret that i found this past year that my diet and excercise has influenced my life in this way: when i take care of myself, i give out messages that i am worth it. This also keeps me protected in a world where predators and players are out looking for the most vulnerable of the herd which often feels as though i have been left behind. if you keep taking care of yourself, you will be able to make better choices of friends and activities you engage in.
And that is what i have learned, among other things i have stumbled upon. I have not met the man of my dreams but when i stay so busy I forget that he is not on my horizon..well time becomes my companion instead of my enemy.
I went out with my sister, mother, and friends. I had many men wanting to date me however I told them I was not interested that I had too much baggage! Meeting in person is best in my opinion as I find online people play games. For some reason when you say your not interested they chase you more. The man I'm with now for over nine years is my Knight in Shining Armor and he calls me his Lady. I tried my best to run him off. To this day when I see several of the guys they ask if they have a chance? What is wrong with them? Even an Italian neighbor of five years keeps asking me if I got rid of my man! He told me the first year I lived there he would love to date me knowing I was sick, I have a son who is slow that I raise (he is 34) and raising a granddaughter due to my oldest son passing. Now that is baggage. Try going out with a group a be yourself.
It may sound cliche but the right man will come along.. My tremors were apparent when I met my boyfriend 2 1/2 yrs ago and he actually was with me for official diagnosis.. He's my biggest cheerleader and love of my life.. You will find someone ❤️
Find someone else who has Parkinson's by going to seminars and group meetings. I haven't found my man yet, but he's out there somewhere.
I am not going to go anywhere when I won't enjoy being there anyway. In short, En-joy yourself and you are more likely to find someone else who will enjoy being with you.
From a very experienced (read old) lady there are mostly frogs out there. Princes are very rare. Much better to,look for good friends that share life interests and intelligence. Brains last , looks don't always.
