Tremor
A MyParkinsonsTeam Member asked a question 💭

My main symptom is tremor and twitching in my hand. I can not fall asleep easily and when I finally fall asleep the tremors wake me up. Told that my neurologist and she said if those tremors acting like that when I am asleep it means that they are not parkinsonian tremors. What do you think about that?

There are many different types of tremors, but most are not associated with Parkinson's Disease. Essential tremor is the most common. It's the type of tremor Katherine Hepburn had that affected her voice and caused her head to shake. Then there's Parkinsonian tremor, the one most PD sufferers have although 25% of PD patients have both. Unlike Ms. Hepburn, Parkinsonian tremors rarely affect speech or cause your head to shake.

Your question may tell some of your story. You say the tremor affects your hand, not hands. Parkinsonian tremors start one side and may move to the other whereas essential tremors affect both sides as soon as they begin. Parkinsonian tremors are "at rest" tremors which explains why they bother you while you are trying to sleep whereas essential tremors are "action" tremors and affect you while you are in motion. Follow this link and you will see a chart that compares the two. https://essentialtremor.org/wp-content/uploads/...

I am by no means an expert, so use this for informational purposes only, but I think you will find it very interesting and I hope it helps you.

Blount: I am repeating my message, as I don't see it. I have Parkinson's tremor in my right hand. It is a resting tremor, it keeps me awake when I am trying to go to sleep, when I finally do fall asleep, it disappears.

Your answer was perfect. I have a "resting tremor' in my right hand, which is how I was diagnosed. I also have some balance issues

@Bfont Your reference above was very useful. I have both PD and ET.
