Will I Eventually Lose My Voice?

My husband just had covid, and a bad UTI and was in the hospital 9 days. The hospital staff spoke to me about Palliative Care and Hospice. I fought that , because I knew he was a fighter. He was sent to a rehab center, and I go there every single day to encourage him. He has been rehab for 3 weeks - where he finally escapes next Tuesday the 30th. He was in very bad shape, but he does whatever they ask of him and is improving. His voice was soft and often a whisper. Working with the Speech therapist he has improved a lot. He is 85 and still has improved. The tongue exercises, and other ways to move the muscles in the throat are helping. He has been on soft food because he wasn't swallowing well - and that has improved. The speech therapist feels when he is discharged he will slowly be able to have real food - with supervision to ensure that he is swallowing properly, not taking large bites, drinking slowly with a straw and his head bent down. If I supervise and help him to always eat and drink the right way - after a month or so it should become habit. Anyway, please do not give up on the swallowing issues. Talk to your speech therapist about overdoing any exercises, let them know of struggles. This therapy, like others, will help you stay stronger and live a better life. He is still walking with a walker, after a lot of therapy of all kinds. You must do the exercises every day, and that is a lot for many of you, depending on the day. But it is worth it. PLEASE know that you are not alone and that there is help for many of these problems. Hugs!
