I have seen a few posts lately of people asking their neurologists for this test. I saw 2 posts today where their scans came back negative. They weren't sure what exactly that meant as they hadn't spoken with their neurologists. I'm on my 3rd neurologist and the second one told me on my first visit that I had LBD. I was taking more meds in addition to the PD meds. I left this doctor because he spent maybe 5 minutes with me and he did not discuss a plan or anything. He had too many patients… read more

The Datscan is actually meant to rule out Parkinsonism, not exactly to diagnose. However, it is still considered relatively new technology and since my DatScan showed nothing but a sort of fog in a skull, I was not overly impressed. I trust my neurologist and his recommendations. I’ve also been diagnosed by 3 other opinions and they all agree, which adds to my trust in my neurologist. A good neurologist doesn’t usually need the DatScan, especially if he’s been in practice for awhile, and since technology can fail just as often, if not more, I would go with your doctor and allow him to determine the diagnosis. Based on my DatScan, vague as it was, I was diagnosed with PD. That’s a pretty sketchy diagnosis based on vague evidence if looking at the DatScan film. And when my diagnosis was changed to MSA it had to be done without a scan.

I had a DAT. Scan as soon as l was diagnosed .My neurologist at the time said that it was the only test that could be relied upon to give a reliable diagnosis. I wish l could have kept that neurologist . I’ve had three others since and haven’t trusted any of them . I don’t have one at all now as mine retired last year and hasn’t been replaced as yet so we are just muddling on. Fortunately we have a very good Parkinson’s nurse

My husband's doctor sait it was great for a diagnosis and can be repeated in a few years to see the progression.

Donna, & Treesha.

Neurologists with the MDS (Movement Disorder Specialist) certification have 2 years of additional training working exclusively with PwP's (People with Parkinson). But unfortunately, there are few yet certified.

If you find a Certified MDS you're lucky.
