Margaretmary,. I get a catalogue called Support and another one called Comfort. They have gadgets that attach to the bed for support while getting in and out that he could hold on to. They have many helpful things for the disabled and the elderly.
I am sure you can find them on the internet and order or just call their toll free numbers. (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators).
Hope that might help.

My husband grew depressed and stopped walking or exercising his legs. I told him it is use it or lose it! He did not listen and now can barely stand or walk. Due to losing all the muscle strength and allowing it to waste away? He now had vasovagal syncope upon standing and trying to walk a few feet. Encourage use of a floor cycle? Ankle weights for sitting exercises? Leg raises? Anything so he doesn't wind up like my husband. Good luck
