We've tried the socks that come from the hospital but are very difficult to get on him be cause his legs and feet often swell. I was thinking about slip on water shoes. I use them when I try to do yoga. We have carpet but it seems to be wearing where he sits and at his bed. Anyone have ideas?

Members offered many helpful ideas for finding shoes that prevent slipping for someone with Parkinson's who also deals with swollen feet. Several members recommended brands like Skechers, New Balance with Velcro closures, Stretchers, Sperry Topsiders, and Coleman indoor/outdoor slippers, noting that wide-fit and easy slip-on styles work well. A recurring theme was trying shoes on in person when possible, and one member also suggested placing rubber mats beside the bed and recliner as an extra safety measure.

I got a pak of 4 rubber mats from Amazon. I put one beside the bed and one in front of the recliner. They are very sturdy, modestly priced and really help with the slipping problem.

My HWP is from England and is used to wearing house slippers. He is wearing Coleman's (like the lanterns 😊). They are indoor/outdoor, but he wears them indoors only. His feet get cold, so I got the ones with sheepskin inside. I got them because the tread on the bottom looked sturdy and non-slip. They aren't too expensive and this current pair has lasted a few years and I just looked at the tread and it's still good. I replace the sheepskin insoles as needed. If he feels unsteady, we have canes, a walker, and me to steady him. I got them off Amazon. Have a look at them and if they might fit your need.

Jim wears Sketchers for every day, since they are easy to slip on, but likes Brooks running shoes when we wants more support. He has very wide feet, so sometimes finding shoes that fit isn't easy.

I researched this exact problem and found three shoe brands recommended for Parkinson's. I hate to shop on line for items like this, I was able to find two stores that carried all three.

Each had their negative aspects but trying them on solved it for me "Stretchers". Both of the other two had minimum comfort for me, plus they were twice the price of Stretchers.

I loved the comfort so I said YES to Stretchers, There negative was they do not last as long as the others. Hm-mm so the expensive ones were slightly over $150 each and Stretchers was $75. So in the same time period I can buy two pair of comfortable shoes or one OK pair. I will buy the Stretchers.

Main thought is if you can try them on first, please do!
