Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, bladder function, and digestion. MSA can also affect the central nervous system, which controls voluntary body functions such as movement, speech, and thinking.

One of the most common symptoms of MSA is olfactory dysfunction, or impaired sense of smell. This can make it difficult to smell food, flowers, or other scents. Olfactory dysfunction can also make it difficult to taste food, as taste is closely linked to smell.
