Although exercising as prescribed, I've begun to fall at random. I've no idea why. My feet take off in three-inch shuffling, and if I can't grab something fast, I face-plant onto the concrete. Or whatever is underfoot. It is very depressing. A few days ago, a young lady rushed to gather my groceries as I tumbled to the floor in the hallway. It was kind of her. But it still stung my ego. Not that I have a lot of that anymore. I'm just waiting for the stumble at a crosswalk into the path of the… read more

Members rallied around a post about the scary and ego-bruising reality of random falls with Parkinson's disease, sharing both heartbreak and hard-won wisdom. Several members urged calling your doctor right away after a second fall, switching to a rollator with brakes for better stability, wearing flat supportive shoes, and trading the rollator for a grocery cart while shopping. A recurring theme was the importance of slowing down, paying full attention to every movement, and finding humor and grace in the struggle, with the original poster later sharing the hopeful update that a medication mix-up was found and corrected.

@A MyParkinsonsTeam Member: When you enter the store, trade your walker for a cart. Shop, take cart & purchases to car, unload to trunk, return cart to store and use walker to return to car. Be sure to obtain a handicap card to hang from your rearview so you can park close to the entrance. Walkers fold for storage. I kept mine behind the driver's seat. Did this for two years, no problems.

I know exactly what you are going thru. I had the same thing happen to me back in April 2024. I thought I could just add more of the BIG moves into my daily routine. I thought wrong. I fell on my left shoulder so hard that I broke my arm and shoulder May 2 2024..I had sugery In June of 2024 & didn't get finished with therapy for my shoulder until October 2024. I'm using rollater now because I don't want anything like this to happen again. I can't stop a fall with a cane or a walker ,the rollator has breaks on it. My PD doctor changed my meds by half a tablet after chewing me out for not calling him as soon as I had a second fall. Using the rollator until I can go a month with out doing the shuffle. I told you all of this so you could learn from my mistakes CALL YOUR DOCTOR & USE A WALKING DEVISE So far this month zero falls

Walking was one of the first things I had to reteach myself how to do once PD started trying to take over my life. My husband had cancer & I was the only one who could feed the animals. My three-inch shuffle would have made me take hours to get from the barnyard to the house. So I thought about it - how long is my normal stride. Then I tried to reach that far. It took me over a year to reteach myself walking easily without having to plaN an & think every part of the moves. This is what I eventually did to Fix this in myself ! Believe my dog when he told me I was walking way too slowly. MORE LATER - I am falling asleep!

I find the key to avoiding falls is to be very deliberate in everything you do. Even healthy people fall when rushing or being distracted. WE CANT ALLOW OURSELVES TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT OUR FULL ATTENTION. We have to take our time, and let them wait, or even leave us behind.
