Once a week, I participate in a Zoom meeting called Sing for Parkinson’s Disease. It’s through the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. I enjoy it very much. The first 15-20 minutes we do physical and vocal warm-ups.

For a month now I’ve been doing exercises for Parkinson’s and just got to thinking. What type of exercise is singing.

I found a website that explains the benefits of Singing but I can’t find any information on what type of exercise it is.

Singing can be considered both a vocal and respiratory exercise that helps strengthen muscles involved in speech and breathing. For people with Parkinson's disease, singing exercises are particularly beneficial as they help address voice problems that can make communication difficult. The practice helps strengthen the muscles and nerves necessary for clear, easy speech, which can become soft, breathy, or strained due to PD. The combination of physical and vocal warm-ups you're doing in your singing program is excellent for overall voice maintenance. Many MyParkinsonsTeam members have found music therapy and vocal exercises helpful in managing their symptoms. The fact that you're enjoying these sessions is wonderful, as consistent practice with activities we enjoy tends to lead to better long-term adherence and results.
