It isn't that "Proteins are not allowed". Proteins do in fact interfere with the absorption of Carbidopa/Levodopa, so you just need to worry about timing. The "rule of thumb" I got from my neurologist, and I've heard it from other sources as well, is "30 minutes before, an hour after", which means, if you're going have proteins in your meal, take your PD meds at least 30 minutes before eating, or wait an hour after you've finished eating.

Ok, thank you. That reminds me to drink another glass of water. 😊

I have read that the protein conflict does not affect everyone. It doesn't seem to make much difference for my husband. He is very loose about when he takes his pills.

When I first started on C/L I lost too much weight and was nauseous a lot. Keeping your muscle mass up is so important in my opinion. So keep eating your protein just not really close to your pills. If having something on your stomach helps your nausea, do it. I don't have problems with nausea at all anymore. Good luck.

It's important to note that proteins aren't completely forbidden - they just need to be timed properly with your medication. You can take your Parkinson's medication either 30 minutes before or 60 minutes after eating protein-containing foods. This approach is called a protein redistribution diet.

It's important to note that proteins aren't completely forbidden - they just need to be timed properly with your medication. You can take your Parkinson's medication either 30 minutes before or 60 minutes after eating protein-containing foods. This approach is called a protein redistribution diet.

For meals close to medication times, focus on these lower-protein options:
- Broth-based soups
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains
- Olive oil and healthy fats
- Herbs and spices To ensure you're still getting adequate nutrition while managing your medication schedule, try these strategies:
- Work with a registered dietitian to plan appropriate meal timing
- Consider protein supplements if needed when not taking medication
- Space out protein-rich meals to times when you're not taking levodopa
- Focus on high-quality protein sources during non-medication times

Always consult with your doctor about specific timing of medications with meals, as individual needs may vary.
