Be the first to react

If you have a partner, ask them how you are driving. Sometimes we can't judge ourselves. With my husband, I noticed that he wasn't staying in his lane, he was sometimes slow to react to other drivers and issues, he had a harder time gauging his speed. If you find yourself slamming on the brakes a lot, you might have a problem.

Even in early stages of Parkinson's, driving safety can be affected by motor symptoms, visual problems, and cognitive changes. Here are key symptoms to monitor:

• Tremors in hands and feet that may affect vehicle control
• Slowed reaction time
• Vision issues like blurriness or double vision
• Changes in cognitive function affecting attention and spatial awareness
• Drowsiness while driving To ensure safe driving, consider these proactive steps:

• Get evaluated by an occupational therapist or driving rehabilitation specialist
• Take a driving test to assess your abilities (the results aren't reported to DMV)
• Consider switching to an automatic transmission if manual shifting becomes difficult
• Avoid highway driving or nighttime driving if needed
• Take regular breaks on long trips

Remember, each person's experience with PD is different. Work with your healthcare team to monitor your driving abilities and make adjustments as needed.
