Voice changes are a common symptom of Parkinson's disease. Many people experience speaking in a quiet, breathy, or strained voice that may get thinner as the day progresses. This happens because Parkinson's can affect the nerves and muscles necessary for clear speech.
Common speech problems include:
• Speaking quietly
• Having a monotone voice
• Stuttering or stammering
• Slurring words
• Voice becoming softer throughout the day The good news is there are ways to manage these voice changes:
1. Work with a speech therapist or speech pathologist who can provide specific exercises
2. Practice having conversations in quiet spaces
3. Make sure people can see your face when speaking
4. Speak in shorter phrases to maintain breath control
5. Schedule vocal rest periods before important conversations
It's important to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider so they can get you started on an appropriate treatment plan to help improve your communication.
