Can a DaT scan help tell MSA apart from Parkinson's disease?
Unfortunately, a DaT scan cannot distinguish between multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson's disease. While DaT scans are helpful for some diagnostic purposes, they don't differentiate these two conditions from each other.
Both MSA and Parkinson's involve the destruction of dopamine-producing brain cells, which is what DaT scans detect. Since this dopamine loss happens in both conditions, the scan will show similar abnormalities regardless of which condition you have.
DaT scans are better suited for distinguishing Parkinson's disease from essential tremor, but they're not definitive for diagnosing Parkinson's itself - they mainly support a diagnosis.
Doctors rely on other factors to tell MSA apart from Parkinson's, such as:
* How quickly symptoms progress (MSA usually progresses faster)
* When balance problems appear (typically earlier in MSA)
* Severity of autonomic issues like blood pressure drops, bladder problems, and breathing difficulties (usually more severe in MSA)
* Response to Parkinson's medications (MSA stops responding sooner)
This is why getting an accurate diagnosis can be challenging and may take time.
