Members responded to the question about how long it takes on medication before noticing dyskinesia, with timelines ranging from a few months to around six years. Several members shared that physical exertion, like grocery shopping, can trigger involuntary movements, with some finding relief by switching to grocery delivery and reducing demanding activities. A recurring theme was learning to listen to the body's limits, with practical tips like taking aspirin for nighttime leg pain and working closely with a neurologist to manage side effects like nausea.

I have found that my body reacts with dyskinesias. For example, I do not shop for my groceries anymore. I pick them out via computer and have them delivered to my home. Otherwise, if fill my cart with a lot of groceries and push them over that huge store, by the time I get to the checkout counter, my arms, legs and torso have many involuntary and repetitive movements. That task is just too many muscle movement for me, resulting in dyskinesias.

My husband has been on c/l for 6 years and has no dyskinesia. He doesn't have bad tremors so that may be a factor. His issues are more mental and slowness.

How long does it typically take for dyskinesia to develop after starting Parkinson's medications?

Dyskinesia typically develops 4 to 10 years after starting levodopa treatment. However, the timing can vary from person to person.

Some factors that may increase your risk of developing dyskinesia earlier include:
- Being diagnosed with Parkinson's before age 60
- Being female

When dyskinesia occurs during the day:

Most commonly, dyskinesia happens during your "on" time - when your levodopa is working most effectively. This is called peak dose dyskinesia and usually occurs 1 to 2 hours after taking your medication.

A MyParkinsonsTeam member shared: "I start to feel dyskinesia about a half hour to an hour after my morning dose." Another noted: "Mine hits whenever the meds are wearing off and can last up to two hours a stretch."

Tracking is helpful:

Keeping a diary of when your dyskinesia occurs in relation to your medication times can help your doctor adjust your treatment. Recording the date, time, frequency, and what happened makes it easier to discuss symptoms and find solutions.

Not everyone with Parkinson's will develop dyskinesia, and experiences vary widely among those who do.
